NavigateERP for African business

Top business management software for African SMEs

Navigate publishes this guide and is one of the options in it, and the list below is not a ranking. The strongest choice for an African SME is the one that handles your country's tax rules, payment methods, language and support, since these vary more between markets than core features do. Global products reach more countries through partners, while regional products can go deeper in fewer markets, so check your country specifically.

About this guide

Navigate writes and publishes this page, and sells a product listed on it. "Top" here means products that a buyer in Africa is likely to meet. It is not a score, and we did not measure them against each other.

We included a product only if we could read its vendor's own pages on 31 October 2026. Sage's product pages did not load for us, so it is not in the table, and that says nothing about its quality. The table is alphabetical.

SMEs are a large part of any economy. The World Bank says they represent around 90 percent of all businesses and more than half of global employment. That figure is global, not specific to Africa, but it shows why software choice for this group matters.

Selection criteria

  • Your country's tax rules. Kenya has eTIMS, Rwanda has EBM, Tanzania has VFD and Uganda has EFRIS. Ask whether the connection is live today in your country, or planned.
  • Your country's payments. Does the system connect to your mobile money provider, or can you only record the money after it arrives?
  • Currency. Can you sell in one currency, buy in another and report in a third?
  • Language. Can your team work in the language they use every day?
  • Connectivity. What still works when the internet is poor? Ask for a live demonstration on a phone with no signal.
  • Local support. Who answers, in which hours, and at what cost?
  • Scope. Do you need accounting only, or also stock, payroll, fleet, projects or production?

Global or regional: an honest trade-off

Global products have longer histories, larger partner networks and more extensions. If your business spans continents, or your investors require a known brand, that counts for a lot.

Products built for one region can fit local habits more closely out of the box, such as mobile money and local tax. But they may cover fewer countries well. That is true of Navigate. Its live tax connection today is KRA eTIMS, and its direct mobile money connection is M-Pesa.

Neither path is automatically better. Compare the product and the people who will support it in your country.

What Navigate covers outside Kenya today

  • Card and wallet checkouts: Pesapal in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda. Flutterwave in those four plus Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.
  • Mobile money accounts: M-Pesa, Airtel Money, T-Kash, MTN MoMo, Tigo Pesa, HaloPesa and Orange Money can each be set up as an account in Navigate, so balances agree with the ledger. A direct connection for collecting money exists only for M-Pesa. Airtel Money and MTN MoMo connections are planned.
  • Tax: VAT codes are set per organisation in Settings. URA EFRIS is planned. Other fiscal systems are not connected.
  • Payroll: Kenya 2026 rates are set up for you. For Tanzania, Uganda or Rwanda you add the rates before running payroll.

When not to choose Navigate

Choose another product if your main market needs a live fiscal connection Navigate does not have today, such as EFRIS in Uganda or EBM in Rwanda, unless you confirm a route first. Choose another if your staff work mainly in Portuguese or Arabic, since the interface is in English, Kiswahili and French. Global groups that need one system across several continents should look at SAP Business One or Business Central, and a local partner may matter more than the product.

Where Navigate may not fit

  • The only live tax authority connection today is KRA eTIMS in Kenya. EFRIS is planned, and no connection exists for EBM or VFD.
  • The only direct mobile money connection is M-Pesa. MTN MoMo and Airtel Money direct connections are planned.
  • The interface languages are English, Kiswahili and French only.
  • Statutory payroll is set up for Kenya only. Other countries must enter their own rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the top business software for African SMEs?

There is no single top product. Country tax rules, payment methods and local support decide most of the fit. This guide lists options without ranking them, and its publisher sells one of them.

Does Navigate work in my country?

Navigate has setup templates for all 54 African countries covering currency and phone codes, but depth varies. Kenya has the deepest support today. Check the tax and payment connections for your country before you commit.

Can a business use mobile money with an ERP?

Often, but the depth differs. Some systems take payment prompts and match them automatically, while others only let you record money after it arrives. Ask to see it happen with your provider.

What if our internet is unreliable?

Ask each vendor what works offline and watch it run. In Navigate, customer visits and sales orders can be captured offline on the phone. Other screens need a connection. Odoo says its POS keeps working offline.
